Band 9 Model Answer
The line graph illustrates changes in the number of people participating in five distinct activities at a Melbourne social centre between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, it is clear that the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the two-decade period. While table tennis and musical performances experienced significant growth in attendance, amateur dramatics saw a drastic decline, and martial arts participation remained relatively stable.
Looking at the most popular choices, the film club consistently attracted the highest number of participants, starting at approximately 64 in 2000. Despite a slight dip to 60 in 2010, it recovered and peaked at roughly 65 by 2020. Martial arts maintained a steady, albeit fluctuating, level of interest; it began with 36 participants, dipped slightly in 2005, and returned to its original figure of 36 by the end of the period.
Conversely, the remaining activities showed dynamic trends. Table tennis began with just 16 participants in 2000 and saw modest growth until 2010. Following this, its popularity surged dramatically, reaching around 54 participants by 2020. Musical performances, which had no participants until after 2005, experienced steady, uninterrupted growth to finish at approximately 18 attendees. In stark contrast, amateur dramatics suffered a consistent downward trajectory, plummeting from about 26 participants in 2000 to a mere 6 in 2020.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2: Competition vs. Cooperation
The Task:
Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Write at least 250 words.
Task 2
Band 9 Model Essay
The dynamics of human interaction, whether in educational institutions or corporate environments, are frequently shaped by the opposing forces of competition and cooperation. While some argue that a competitive environment is the primary driver of success and innovation, others advocate for a collaborative approach to achieve sustainable progress. In my opinion, although competition can stimulate initial drive, cooperation is ultimately a more powerful and beneficial force for both individual well-being and societal advancement.
Those who champion competition point to its undeniable ability to act as a catalyst for excellence. In academic and professional settings, the desire to outperform peers often motivates individuals to push their boundaries, refine their skills, and maximize their productivity. For example, the competitive nature of the free market compels companies to innovate continuously, resulting in better products and services for consumers. Similarly, grading systems in schools can encourage students to study harder and achieve higher academic standards. From this perspective, rivalry prevents stagnation and ensures that the most capable individuals and ideas rise to the top.
On the other hand, proponents of cooperation argue that collaborative efforts yield more profound and far-reaching benefits. When individuals pool their diverse skills, resources, and perspectives, they can solve complex problems that would be insurmountable for a single person. In the modern workplace, cross-departmental teamwork is often essential for executing large-scale projects successfully. Furthermore, a cooperative environment significantly reduces the chronic stress and anxiety often associated with hyper-competitive cultures. By fostering mutual support and shared goals, cooperation nurtures a healthier psychological environment, which reduces burnout and builds stronger interpersonal relationships.
In my view, while a healthy degree of competition can spark ambition, an over-reliance on it often leads to a toxic, zero-sum mentality where one person’s success necessitates another’s failure. The most significant human achievements, such as global medical breakthroughs or space exploration, have historically been the result of extensive collaboration rather than isolated rivalry. Therefore, educational and corporate systems should prioritize teaching individuals how to work harmoniously in teams.
In conclusion, both competition and cooperation play distinct roles in human development. However, cultivating a spirit of collaboration is fundamentally more advantageous, as it not only allows humanity to tackle larger challenges collectively but also promotes a more supportive and mentally healthy society.
