Band 9 Model Answer
The provided diagram illustrates the cyclical process through which ethanol, a type of renewable biofuel, is produced and utilized.
Overall, the production of ethanol is a multi-stage, cyclical process. It begins with the cultivation of raw plant materials, progresses through mechanical and chemical processing to extract the fuel, and concludes with its consumption in vehicles, which consequently emits the carbon dioxide necessary to restart the cycle.
In the initial stage of the cycle, plants and trees absorb sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow. Once these plants reach maturity, they are mechanically harvested using agricultural machinery. Following the harvest, the raw plant material undergoes a “pre-processing” phase, where it is passed through a milling machine that shreds the vegetation into small, manageable pieces, thereby separating the cellulose.
During the subsequent “processing” stage, this cellulose is transported to a chemical facility. Here, the material is treated to extract its natural sugars. Once the sugars are isolated, specific microbes are introduced to the mixture, which facilitates fermentation and ultimately converts the sugars into liquid ethanol. Finally, this extracted ethanol is distributed for use as a combustible fuel in various modes of transportation, including cars, trucks, and airplanes. As these vehicles burn the biofuel, they release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, which is then reabsorbed by newly planted trees, perpetuating the biological cycle.
💡 Why this is a Band 9 Answer:
- Task Achievement: The answer provides a clear, accurate, and fully developed response. The overview beautifully captures the most important feature of the diagram: it is a continuous, biological cycle.
- Coherence & Cohesion: Paragraphs are logically organized. The flow moves seamlessly from the overview to the agricultural stages, and finally to the chemical processing and end-use. Transition phrases are used naturally (Overall, In the initial stage, Following the harvest, During the subsequent processing stage).
- Lexical Resource: Uses precise, advanced vocabulary appropriate for describing a scientific process (cyclical process, renewable biofuel, cultivation of raw plant materials, mechanically harvested, fermentation, perpetuating the biological cycle).
- Grammatical Range & Accuracy: Employs a superb mix of complex sentence structures flawlessly while maintaining passive voice where appropriate for describing a process (is produced, are mechanically harvested, is transported, are introduced).

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2: Saving Money for the Future
The Task:
It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Write at least 250 words.
Task 2
Band 9 Model Essay
In an era characterized by economic unpredictability and rising living costs, financial planning has never been more critical. It is frequently argued that cultivating a habit of saving money for the future is essential for all individuals, particularly the youth. I strongly agree with this assertion, as building financial reserves provides a vital safety net against unforeseen hardships and instills crucial life-long discipline in young adults.
The most compelling reason why saving is universally important is the profound financial security it provides. Life is inherently unpredictable, and individuals of all ages inevitably face sudden, unbudgeted expenses. Whether dealing with a sudden medical emergency, an unexpected job loss, or urgent household repairs, having a robust financial buffer prevents people from falling into crippling debt. Without savings, people are often forced to rely on high-interest loans or credit cards to navigate crises, which can lead to a devastating cycle of poverty. Therefore, a healthy savings account is the foundation of a stable, stress-free life.
Furthermore, it is especially crucial to instill this habit in young people early on. While teenagers and young adults might be tempted to spend their disposable income on immediate gratification—such as the latest technology or designer clothing—encouraging them to save teaches invaluable financial literacy. Understanding concepts like delayed gratification and compound interest prepares the youth for major adult milestones, such as funding a university education, purchasing a first home, or starting a business. By learning to manage and save their money early, young people transition into adulthood equipped with the responsibility and independence required to thrive in the modern economy.
In conclusion, I completely agree that putting money aside for the future is an absolute necessity for everyone. Establishing a financial safety net protects individuals from life’s inevitable emergencies, and teaching this practice to young people lays the groundwork for a responsible, secure, and prosperous adulthood.
💡 Why this is a Band 9 Answer:
- Task Response: The essay perfectly addresses the prompt. It clearly states a strong agreement in the introduction, thoroughly defends why saving is important for everyone (security, avoiding debt), and specifically addresses why it is important for young people (financial literacy, delayed gratification).
- Coherence & Cohesion: The essay utilizes a highly effective four-paragraph structure. Transition phrases guide the reader effortlessly through the complex arguments (The most compelling reason, Furthermore, While teenagers… By learning to manage, In conclusion).
- Lexical Resource: Showcases an exceptional, sophisticated vocabulary suited for an economic and sociological discursive essay (economic unpredictability, robust financial buffer, crippling debt, delayed gratification, compound interest).
- Grammatical Range & Accuracy: Uses a wide variety of complex grammatical structures perfectly, creating a highly persuasive, authoritative, and academic tone.
