Band 9 Model Answer
The provided maps illustrate the comprehensive transformation of Porth Harbour between the year 2000 and the present day.
Overall, it is clear that the harbour has undergone significant commercial and recreational development over the period. The most notable changes include the conversion of the disused castle into a hotel, the relocation of maritime docking facilities, and the addition of new amenities for visitors.
Looking at the western side of the harbour, the docking areas for boats have been entirely reorganized. In 2000, the marina for private yachts was situated in the northernmost dock, with fishing boats located just south of it. Today, these two areas have swapped locations. To accommodate these changes, an additional block of showers and toilets has been constructed next to the southern car park, mirroring the existing facilities near the northern car park.
Significant commercial development has also taken place in the southern and eastern regions. The previously disused castle on the south-eastern peninsula has been redeveloped into a hotel, and the adjacent public beach is now strictly a private beach for hotel guests. Furthermore, the road leading to this area has been branched to provide access to a newly constructed row of cafés and shops, which have been built immediately west of the existing lifeboat station. Finally, the dock for passenger ferries in the center of the harbour has been expanded with a new, parallel pier, creating additional docking capacity, while the public beach to the north has remained unchanged.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2: Shorter Working Week
The Task:
The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend.
Do you agree or disagree?
Write at least 250 words.
Task 2
Band 9 Model Essay
The traditional five-day working week has been a staple of modern employment for decades; however, there is a growing consensus that this model is outdated. Many advocate for a shorter working week accompanied by an extended weekend. I strongly agree with this proposition, as a reduced work schedule significantly improves employee mental health and, contrary to traditional corporate beliefs, can actually enhance overall productivity.
The most compelling argument for a shorter working week is the profound benefit it offers to employee well-being and work-life balance. In contemporary society, chronic stress and occupational burnout have become pervasive issues, often stemming from an relentless cycle of work and insufficient recovery time. A three-day weekend provides individuals with the necessary time to decompress, pursue personal hobbies, and foster meaningful relationships with family and friends. This extended period of rest ensures that employees return to their professional duties mentally rejuvenated and physically rested, which dramatically reduces absenteeism and staff turnover rates.
Furthermore, a shorter working week actively promotes greater efficiency in the workplace. According to Parkinson’s Law, work expands to fill the time available for its completion. When employees are given five days to complete their tasks, there is often a natural tendency to spread the work out, leading to time wasted on redundant meetings and distractions. Conversely, compressing the same workload into four days forces both management and staff to prioritize tasks meticulously, eliminate inefficiencies, and maintain a higher level of focus. Numerous global trials of the four-day workweek have consistently demonstrated that companies can maintain, or even increase, their output levels while operating on a reduced schedule.
In conclusion, transitioning to a shorter working week with a longer weekend is a highly progressive and beneficial shift. It not only alleviates the modern epidemic of workplace burnout by prioritizing human well-being, but it also optimizes corporate efficiency by encouraging more focused and deliberate work practices.
